Ubbe Ragnarsson, a Norwegian warlord of the 9th century, fascinates enthusiasts of Viking history. But who was this man really, and what role did he play in the great battles of his time? Let’s delve together into his tragic story.
Ubbe Ragnarsson was one of the sons of the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok. Along with his brothers Halfdan and Ivar the Boneless, he led the great Heathen Army that left its mark on the annals of England. This formidable trio terrorized but also shaped the history of an entire continent.
In 878, a band of Vikings led by Ubbe landed in England, advancing along the coast from Combwich. On their path, they encountered Saxons entrenched in the fortress of Cynwit.
The Vikings believed they could force the Saxons to surrender quickly, due to a lack of potable water. The hope was to see the defenders die of thirst or collapse from exhaustion.
But against all odds, the Saxons chose not to wait for their end on the hill. At dawn, in a desperate surprise attack, they caught the Vikings off guard and secured a resounding victory.
Ubbe Ragnarsson met his death at the hands of the Saxons, under the command of Odda of Devon, during this battle at Cynwit in Somerset. A poignant story of an unexpected defeat that also marked a tragic end for Ubbe.
We have few precise details about Ubbe. Most of the information concerning this Viking leader comes primarily from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Nevertheless, the imprint of his passage is still visible today, if only through place names. For example, the name of the town of Hubberston in Pembrokeshire, Wales, derives from Ubbe’s name.
Ubbe not only made history but also captivated the contemporary imagination. His legendary figure appears in numerous recent works.
For example, in the series Vikings, Ubbe Ragnarsson is portrayed by Jordan Patrick Smith. In this television narrative, he is depicted as one of Ragnar Lothbrok’s sons, and we follow him through various adventures and battles.
He is also portrayed by Rune Temte in the series The Last Kingdom. Here, Ubbe is shown as a Danish leader who came to take control of England, revealing another aspect of his personality and ambitions.
Ubbe Ragnarsson also makes an appearance in the game Assassin's Creed Valhalla. In this adventure, the protagonist Eivor helps Ubbe and his brother Ivar overthrow King Burgred of Mercia, in favor of King Ceowulf II. This video game offers another fascinating perspective on this historical figure and allows players to explore and interact with a reenactment of this troubled time.
It’s amazing to see how a historical character can continue to captivate minds centuries after his death. Ubbe Ragnarsson is a prime example of how legends and history intertwine to create this timeless appeal. Imagining what he must have felt during this last battle, or even during his daily life, helps us understand the tenacity and courage of these warriors of the past.
It is fascinating to see how, even with limited information, Ubbe’s story continues to resonate through various forms of media—whether through series, video games, or books.
